What you need to know about the latest GPSTab update


As we continuously look to improve the usability of our GPSTab platform for drivers and administrators, we are making visual changes to our application and the administrative portal.

In addition to hours of service being displayed as per usual, users will now have a second set of clocks that will inform them of their remaining hours of service, if they were to use the split sleeper berth rule. This new feature is displayed as a set of clocks labeled “SSB” and can be found at the top right corner of the “Driving” and “Shift” clocks, as shown in the images below.

Currently, the system indicates potential violations with an orange-colored line. If drivers take their qualifying split break correctly, the orange line will be removed by the system. 

There has been no change to the regulation or how it is to be used on GPSTab, the only thing changing is the way hours of service are displayed in the app/admin portal. This change should allow drivers to make decisions quicker and safer on what works best for them during their shifts and will also allow them to coordinate with dispatchers and safety personnel more clearly. 

The split sleeper berth rule allows truckers to extend a shift by splitting their 10-hour off-duty time into two stints. According to the FMCSA, drivers can split their sleeper berth either 8/2 or 7/3. 

For example, rather than taking 10 consecutive hours off-duty, drivers can take a 2-hour break and then complete their required 10-hour off-duty break by taking another 8-hour break later in the day, with 7 out of these hours being taken in Sleeper Berth. The same framework applies to the 7/3 split.
