A Comparison of the Top 5 ELDs on the Market in 2019

What is an ELD?

In 2012, U.S. Congressed passed the “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century” bill, or Map-21. This bill required the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to update a driver’s Record of Duty Status (RODS) from an old-timey paper and pencil to a technological one. Thus the ELD was developed. An Electric Logging Device, or ELD is a machine that allows professional truck drivers to easily track Hours of Service, or HOS, compliance. Since December 2017, all truck drivers are required to use an ELD to document their compliance with HOS rules. However, fleets that were already equipped with electronic logging technology before December 2017 have until December of this year to ensure compliance with the new FMCSA mandates.

Each ELD must come with mandated features to fulfill this compliance, such as:

  • Connecting to the truck’s engine to record when truck is in motion
  • Allowing the driver to select On-duty, Off-duty, or On-Duty Not Driving
  • Graphically display a Record of Duty Status
  • Provide data in a format that can be transmitted to law enforcement
  • Be provider-certified that the device meets the proper specifications

In addition to adhering to compliance, ELD’s also help streamline work and efficiency. For example, some ELD’s can save driver time by reducing paperwork, keep a dispatcher updated on the driver’s status, which enables them to plan for loads more efficiently, and reduces the hassle of keeping a paper log, which is better for both the truck driver as well as the environment.

Choosing an ELD

As of 2019, all trucks within the United States must have an FMCSA-approved ELD. But with such a fast deadline approaching, it can be quite overwhelming to choose the best device for your buck. Luckily, we have you covered, since we at UTECH took the time to investigate the pros and cons of each device. Below, we cover the five most popular ELD tabs in the market.

When choosing an ELD for your trucks, it’s important to consider what your needs are in order to streamline compliance procedures and save you time and money. For example, if you have a large corporation with a well-known brand, can you buy your ELDs with a white label so that you can keep brand consistency? Or, if you are a one-person operation with just one truck, does the ELD have a document scanner so you can have multiple ways to submit your trip paperwork?

The other important factor that every owner and truck driver should keep in mind is the customer satisfaction rating. A device might have plenty of fancy features and be offered at competitive pricing; but if it has a low customer satisfaction rating, then chances are the device was poorly manufactured for the sake of the price.

First, let’s check to see what they have in common. All five ELD devices share the following features:

  • Electronic Logs
  • Electronic DVR
  • GPS Tracking
  • Telematics
  • IFTA Reporting
  • GEO Fences

Now let’s look at how each ELD device is different:

GPSTab $20 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes 4.6 GPSTabs by far blows the competition out of the water in terms of price, especially when compared to the number and type of features it offers. Currently, GPSTabs only offers languages in English, Ukrainian, Polish, Spanish, and Russian, but chances are the number of languages offered will need to increase as the trucking industry becomes more international.
KeepTruckin $30 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No No Yes Yes No Yes No No No No No No 4.7 KeepTrackin has a great customer rating, so you’ll most likely be satisfied with your purchase. There is no truck diagnostic or detention tracker, which can make a manager’s job slightly more difficult.
SamSara $34 Yes Yes No Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No Yes No No No No No No 3.7 Unlike KeepTrackin’, it has truck diagnostics. It’s the most expensive of the top five ELD’s, but with a low customer rating, the price may not be worth it.
GorillaSafety $30 Yes Yes No Yes Yes No No No Yes Yes No No No No No*compatible with GPSTab No Yes No N/A GorillaSafety is only one of the two ELD options that provide a white label option, meaning it can be rebranded to fit your market. They don’t offer many of the features that their competitors offer for a similar price.
EzLogz $30 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No No Yes Yes No No No Yes No*compatible with GPSTab No No No 4 Unlike most of its other competitors, it has a Document Scanner, which makes it easier to scan and send documents straight back to your office. However, unlike most of its other competitors, the device lacks a lot of the other features its competitors offer.
