If you’re a driver who’s flirted with the idea of eventually becoming an owner-operator in the trucking industry, OOIDA’s Truck to Success program could be beneficial for you.

The program is scheduled to take place from September 10-12 at the Courtyard Marriott in Blue Springs, Mo. According to the OOIDA, the program training is “designed to follow a logical path of information on the transition from a company driver to an independent contractor.”

There are several benefits to being an owner-operator, as it allows for financial independence for drivers who are unhappy with driving solely for a company.

According to Smart Trucking, owner-operators do have the potential to earn more money than company drivers. Due to contractual agreements made between the owner-operator and the companies they decide to work with, they can make a significant profit if their contracts are managed correctly.

Additionally, Smart Trucking also notes that there is more flexibility in being an owner-operator, as you get to work with your own equipment and get to pick which loads you’d prefer to haul, while also having further flexibility with your time off.

Nevertheless, there are issues that can make being an owner-operator more stressful than being a company driver. The fact is if you’re not ready to be an owner-operator, you could be losing out on a lot of money.

There are several issues to deal with before going into the business of being an owner-operator which includes, picking profitable loads, working with the right carriers, picking a good truck, performing maintenance on your truck, in addition to a handful of other responsibilities.

If not managed correctly, it’s easy to see how becoming an owner-operator can hamper the careers of drivers.

Nonetheless, the OOIDA Truck to Success Program may be able to mitigate some of those issues with the training that it provides. The program’s comprehensive curriculum will include training such as creating a business plan, operating on your own or leasing on to a carrier, permits/licensing, discussing current issues in the industry, among many more.

The program will also feature industry professionals such as Barry Fowler, EA, who is an expert in tax resolution issues and CEO of Taxation Solutions and, which provides services such as tax preparation and business consulting for truck drivers.
