What Happens if You Don’t Have an ELD After April 1, 2018?
In just a few short weeks, the enforcement period for the ELD mandate will be over. After April 1, non-exempt truckers and drivers without ELDs will begin facing severe penalties.
Are you prepared?
If you are not, then you are a part of the 868,000 truckers who do not have ELD technology before April 1. Continue reading to learn what will happen after April 1 if you don’t install an ELD as soon as possible.
1. ELD Violations Will Affect CSA Scores
After April 1, ELD violations will directly impact a carrier’s CSA scores. This is the direct end of the period where CSA scores were not impacted by a lack of ELD technology.
As a reminder, the worse your CSA scores, then the higher your chances of roadside inspections. It will also negatively affect your ability to get the best paying loads and finding good business opportunities.
In the competitive transportation industry, you do not need poor CSA scores to hold you back.
2. Out-of-Service Criteria Enforcement
If you don’t implement ELD technology soon, then you will be placed out-of-service and remain so until you install a compliant ELD.
3. High Penalties and Fines
If you get caught without compliant ELDs, then you will be expected to pay large fines and penalties.
Not to mention, how much it costs to be placed out-of-service.Each day will cost you an approximate loss of $264 in revenue, which is in addition to the amount you will need to pay in penalties.
4. Unnecessary Towing Costs
Last but not least, if you refuse to implement ELD technology before April 1, then you may have to pay unnecessary towing costs. If you get caught without an ELD during inspection, then your truck will have to be towed.
For example, if your truck has to be towed 40 miles, it could cost you up to $344. Again, this is on top of the amount you will have to pay in penalties and other fines.
Will There Be an Extension?
To clear up any confusion due to recent rumors, the April 1st deadline will not be extended. There will not be another “soft enforcement” period.
So, if you don’t implement ELD technology soon, then you will start facing any of the negative impacts from above.
Make Sure You Choose the Right ELD
If you don’t have an ELD and you are currently trying to find one, make sure that you choose the right ELD that is compliant, reliable, affordable, and feature-reach. A good start would be to check out FMCSA’s list of self-certified ELDs.
However, it is important to note that these ELDs are endorsed by the manufacturer, so you must do your own research before choosing the right technology for your business.
Make sure that you look for reviews from real drivers on unbiased platforms. Pick technology that is easy to implement, and make sure you choose a vendor that will provide round-the-clock support. These are all tips that will help you out in the long-run.
