Happy Valentine’s Day!

Let’s face it:

A truck driving career does not make it easy to foster a relationship with your spouse or loved one. It can often feel hard when one person is on the road for extended periods of time, while the other is left at home trying to take care of everything.

On this Valentine’s Day, let this inspiring love story teach you that any strong relationship can survive this career, and help you make positive changes for your loved one today.

A Trucker Love Story

This past November, Bob and Linda Wyatt celebrated 50 years of marriage together. For over half a century, Linda has supported her husband, Bob, in his truck driving career.

The marriage hasn’t always been easy. For Linda, taking care of their three children when they were younger was the hardest part. When Bob was out on the road, it felt as though she was a single mom, having to care for her children 24 hours a day. She felt even worse knowing that Bob was missing out watching their children grow up and spending time together.

As their children got older, however, things got easier. When Bob was working, she finally started getting more time to spend on herself.

So what is the secret to the Wyatt’s successful marriage?

Communication and trust.

Even before the convenience of cell phones, Bob and Linda made a point of checking in with each other regularly. Due to Bob’s busy schedule, Linda trusted that Bob would call when he had a safe opportunity to stop and chat. In turn, Bob trusted that Linda would handle everything at home while he was gone.

After a lifetime career in the trucking industry, Bob and Linda were able to share career milestones together. Like in 2016, when Bob received a CVSA International Driver Excellence Award.

After their many years together, the best piece of advice that Linda can share with others trying to make their trucker relationship work is to find a system that works for them. No committed relationship or truck driving career is the same as the other.

As she states, “It is difficult at times, but hang in there. Do it your own way and keep moving forward.”
