How to Smoothly Transition to An ELD System
As of December 18th, 2017, the ELD mandate has been in effect.
So, have you complied?
Regardless of where you and your drivers stand on the issue, everyone must be compliant. If you are not yet compliant, then your transportation business could face citations, fines, and even have vehicles and drivers placed out of service.
Here are 5 guidelines to help you smoothly transition over from a paper system to an ELD system, today:
1. Understand the ELD Mandate
For a smooth transition, you must first understand the basics of the ELD mandate. You should have a good understanding about what the regulations entail, how the technology works, and how your employees will be affected.
2. Pick the Right ELD Provider
The next step in transition is to choose a strong ELD provider. You should pick one that can provide proper training and training resources for all drivers, administrative staff, dispatchers, and any stakeholders. This will make all the difference as you transition from paper logs to ELDs.
With this step, make sure that you pick an ELD system that meets all your needs, as well as the FMCSA rules. While the FMSCA does have a list with certified vendors, these ELD options are self-certified by the providers, so you must do thorough research.
3. Create a Timeline
After you have chosen an ELD provider, it is important for you to create a timeline for your transportation business. This timeline should work back from the implementation date, to make sure that your entire fleet is compliant.
If you are transitioning to ELDs now, after the compliance date, then be prepared that the installation process may take longer than expected. This is due to both a high demand of ELDs and for technicians to install them.
4. Provide Proper Training
It is also important for you to communicate with your employees and provide them with proper training. Take the extra time to explain what an ELD is and what it isn’t, so that everyone is on the same page.
5. Prepare for Change
Lastly, make sure that you prepare yourself for the change that an ELD transition will bring to you and to your transportation business. There are both pros and cons associated with ELD technology, and the implementation phase is the best time to get yourself familiar with both.
Do You Still Need to Transition to ELDs?
When it comes down to it, to negate many of the numerous problems that can occur, transportation businesses need to ensure that there is strong communication between drivers and the back office once the ELD mandate has gone into effect,
