FMCSA Grants Agriculture Drivers an ELD Extension

12.21.2017 - 8:13 PM Comments: 1

A few weeks ago, the FMCSA announced that they were granting agriculture drivers a 90-day extension for their ELD implementation.

What does this mean?

That any driver who hauls agriculture products and livestock do not have to start using ELDs until March 2018. During this extension period, agriculture drivers will be able to use paper logs instead to track their hours-of-service. Here is what you need to know:

Why the Extension?

The FMCSA is extending the implementation deadline for drivers in the agricultural industry to make it easier for them to transition to ELDs.

This decision was based on feedback from various agriculture businesses to alleviate the ELD mandate impact on the agriculture industry. In return, the extension would also provide the FMCSA more time to review the hours-of-service rules relative to agricultural drivers and to examine their request for exemption.

The AOBRD Guidelines

It is important to note here that this 90-day extension does not apply to the AOBRD grandfather clause.

Meaning, if you manage a fleet of agriculture drivers and your fleet does not implement AOBRDs until the very end of the 90 days, then you will not be eligible for the two-year AOBRD grandfather clause. In order to qualify, you must implement AOBRDs before the ELD compliance date, which was December 18.

If you choose to use the 90-day extension, your drivers will have to transition straight to ELDs once it is over. Please keep this in mind if your business uses paper logs or electronic logbooks to track hours-of-service, as the ELD transition may feel like a total shock without proper training and enough practice time.

I think every truck should stop running for a week this country will fold, It doesn’t make no sense that a bunch of people are making decisions about trucks that has never been in one, I that these bigger companies that run this ELD let them continue don’t force this junk on other companies…..There is no parking nowhere….ALL TRUCKS NEED TO SHUT DOWN FOR 1 WEEK……And these companies that are pushing for this rule have the most accidents….unbelievable leave us Real truckers ALONE!!!!
