California’s Invitation to Autonomous Vehicles

11.17.2017 - 5:57 PM Comments: 0

Last month, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that it would revise its current rules, and allow for companies to test autonomous vehicles. The DMV also announced that it would allow for the public to use autonomous vehicles.

Continue reading to learn what these newer regulations entail, and what this could mean for you overall.

Change in Regulations

The first step for the DMV is to work on regulations to cover testing and public use of autonomous vehicles. Then they can work on making sure that manufacturers are certified and meet federal safety standards.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will have the final say, as they are in charge of developing and enforcing compliance to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

This change in regulations is the direct result of feedback from the public on the original set of regulations released by the DMV, from way back in March. The newer regulations have evolved to include the important feedback that was received. These changes include:

Specifying local notifications on planned driverless testing Developing a template for how to report to illegal activity Identifying concerns to the DMV

What This Means for You

Right now, 42 companies in California hold permits to test autonomous vehicles on the roads. They aren’t alone, however—Singapore has already established zones for autonomous vehicle testing, and other countries are also getting into the competition of autonomous vehicles.

It might not be long before we actually see this technological idea come alive after all.
