Update from FMCSA
While the process is referred to as “self-certification”, the FMCSA does take specific steps to verify that the product meets federally required Electronic Logging Devices specifications.
The most recent tool provided by the FMCSA is a File Validator to ensure that manufacturer’s ELD Output File conforms to the technical specifications in the Rule. While using this Validator is not a mandatory step of the self-certification process, it is certainly a useful tool to make sure the transition will be as smooth as possible once DOT opens access to their servers for data transmission.
Make sure to ask tough questions when evaluating vendors, as these questions will be asked of them in the near future by the government. You will save considerable time and energy if you start your evaluation process early and choose the provider that will bring you value today and in the future. Vendors that are not paying attention to this tool and not testing their software accordingly will ultimately run into compliance issues and at minimum force revisions and updates to their software. This will result in the disruption of operations of their customers.
