Trucking Music Review: Drivin’ My Life Away
Welcome back to the Trucking Music Review! If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s where I review truck-driving country music that I’ve never heard before.
This week, we’re reviewing “Drivin’ My Life Away” by Eddie Rabbit. Rabbit was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1998 and worked with the likes of Elvis Pressley to compose the hit song “Kentucky Rain.”
His song “Drivin' My Life Away” peaked at number one on the Hot Country Singles list and at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.
As an artist with a diverse skillset, Rabbit made a name for himself writing, composing, and performing a variety of sounds.
His versatility is in full display on “Drivin' My Life Away,” as the song also includes elements of other genres. In truth, his performance is Elvis-y or at least takes a lot of inspiration from Pressley’s rock and roll style, though he may not be as talented as the King himself.
While he doesn’t have an amazing or commanding voice like many other country singers, Rabbit is energetic and holds his own very well throughout the song.
While many other songs suffer from having such fast-paced lyrics, Rabbit’s instrumentals do well to match the frantic pace of his singing. While not extremely complex, the instrumentals complement the song very well.
Additionally, the use of an electric guitar throughout the song is very well done. It adds some more ruggedness to the song as a whole, while not overshadowing the elements of country that are on display.
Like many other truck-driving country musicians, Rabbit is also able to perfectly connect with truckers. With just a quick skim through the YouTube comments, you’ll find that truckers are still praising his song to this day.
With such a catchy hook that’s easy to remember, it isn’t hard to imagine myself blaring this song driving down an open highway, honestly. In essence, it’s pretty apparent why this song is so beloved by truckers around the ol’ U.S. of A.
Overall, this song was awesome and its use of rock and roll elements was refreshing, to say the least. I’m going to go ahead and give this one a 9/10.
