Did you know that truck driving is among the 10 most deadly careers in the United States?

In fact, traffic accidents is cited as the top reason for truck driving fatalities. To help save lives and prevent future accidents, here are 3 reasons why truck driving is so dangerous. By evaluating these reasons, we can begin overcoming the dangers of truck driving.

1. Little Time Off

While the ELD mandate is working towards this issue, truck drivers are expected to be driving many hours a day, without a lot of time off. While this has continuously been a hot issue, the goal of ELD technology is to make sure drivers follow shorter hours-of-service and to let them plan better based on their driving status.

Only time will tell just how these devices will save truck driver lives.

2. Unhealthy Habits

Plus, truck driving is very sedentary. Not to mention how unhealthy truck drivers may be. In fact, 86% of approximately 3.2 million truck drivers in the United States are overweight or obese.

This is due to a combination of lack of exercise, poor diet choices, and higher amounts of stress. All of these factors work to increase high blood pressure, even heart attacks.

3. Dangerous Hauls

Lastly, truck drivers may have to transport hazardous materials. While this can be a hazard in itself, thieves can also make truck driving very difficult. This is only compounded by the fact that truck drivers have to work to find a safe place to sleep at night, while also protecting their haul.

As many employers prevent guns in trucks, consider keeping wasp spray, bear spray, or a hammer nearby in your truck for protection.
