How are Truck Drivers Adjusting to the New ELD Regulation?
As a matter of fact, they aren’t.
With 15 million trucks in the United States, as many as an 8 million trucks still don’t have the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) system implemented. With less than 3 weeks before the mandate takes place, these truck drivers don’t have a lot of time left.
Here are the facts:
Recent Truck Driver Protests
From October 3rd through the 8th, many independent truck drivers protested at the nation’s capital, to fight against the ELD mandate. Thousands more protested across the country.
Most of these protesters consist of independent truckers, who refuse to comply with the mandate rule as of yet.
These independent truck drivers are concerned about their privacy and the debate between personal freedom and how much oversight the government can have. They are unsure in regard the reliability of electronic logging device technology, connectivity in remote locations, and the ability of the government to supervise in general.
With little reassurance, these issues have created a major gap in ELD compliance for the trucking industry.
How Much Time do Truck Drivers Have Left to Comply?
On December 18th, 2017, enforcement of the mandate will begin. Keep in mind that truck drivers will not be put out of service or forced to stop driving if they haven’t complied by then. The FMCSA has established a grace period until April 1st, 2018 for truck drivers who have not complied in time.
Take that with a grain of salt, however.
Drivers who don’t comply within the timeframe could begin facing fines or collecting violation points in the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scoring program.
Impact on ELD Suppliers
If you are in the ELD business, then you might be in luck.
There has been a sales rush in November and experts expect it to continue through December, for truck drivers who have delayed until the last second, switching over to an ELD system.
The unpredictable forecast due to last-minute holdouts will make the supply game a little interesting, however. Suppliers are trying to ensure they have enough ELD product available to handle the current rush, and continuing into next year.
