The FMCSA ELD mandate is no longer an “if” and many are starting to take action, whether looking for initial information to determine if their fleet needs to be running on electronic logging devices or field testing ELDs of different providers – the industry is buzzing with questions and concerns.

No doubt it will take time for the entire industry to adjust and find solutions to unforeseen situations and pitfalls. Only time will allow for such adjustments.

We would like to highlight a few myths and potential risk areas to help you transition.

  • 1. Cellphones can be used as ELD screens.
    • a. While the statement is true in itself, we find it difficult to believe that many drivers will want to use their personal cellphones. Why?
      • i. The device will require cellular data
      • ii. The software will lock up the device while vehicle is in motion (over 5mph)
  • 2. Device can be connected and operational within minutes.
    • a. This statement is true for some ELD devices, including GPSTab – ELD Edition, but you must allow time for educating your fleet on the use of the device. Your drivers, your safety department, and your dispatch department need to get comfortable with the system.
